Eoin Madigan: Master Craftsman in Stone Masonry and Lime Mortar Techniques

Eoin Madigan's Journey:

Eóin Madigan is a sixth-generation stone mason and lime practitioner from the Burren region of Co. Clare. His family has a long tradition of working with stone that stretches back at least 200 years. Based in the historic town of Kilfenora, renowned for its ancient cathedral and high crosses, they quarried local limestone and crafted headstones and architectural pieces.

In 2005, Eóin completed a nine-month dry stone walling and stone cutting course under master craftsman Tom Little in Tralee, Co. Kerry. His passion for historic mortars grew under the mentorship of master craftsman Pat McAfee through The Buildings Limes Forum Ireland, where he became an active member.

Eóin served on the technical panel committee of both The Building Limes Forum Ireland and the UK from 2018 to 2023. He is a 2014 William Morris Craft Fellow of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB UK) and a co-founding member of SPAB Ireland.

Eóin's dedication to preserving built heritage is reflected in his extensive work and expertise. He regularly travels across Ireland, upskilling craftspeople and conservation professionals in the specification and use of traditional mortars and their methods of production. His contributions are vital in maintaining and restoring Ireland's historic buildings using sustainable and traditional practices.
