“Matrescence” Suzanne Dolan
East Galway artist Suzanne Dolan captures the "In-Between" Moments of Motherhood in a new series, “Matrescence”, showing the Redcouch gallery, opening March 1st.
East Galway artist Suzanne, a printmaker and ceramic artist, announces her ongoing series, Matrescence, exploring the profound transformation of motherhood. Using bright colours, detailed linework, and a touch of humour, Suzanne captures the often-overlooked "in-between" moments of raising children, from the tender and quiet to the chaotic and overwhelming.
A graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) with First Class Honours in ceramics (2011), Suzanne specializes in print on ceramic forms inspired by personal experiences. Her work invites viewers into the intimate space of home, the very setting where much of her art is created, reflecting the mundane yet deeply significant moments of caregiving, invisible labour, and the mental load carried by default parents, most often mothers.
"It’s not just toe-tickling and adoration, nor is it hysteria in overwhelm," Suzanne explains. "It simply is—another sleepless night, the loss of privacy, the noise and mess. And yet, it remains tender, soft, quiet, and colourful. It just is."
Suzanne’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across Ireland. She has also contributed to print publications and is a co-founder of Mothermaker Studios, an artist collective.
Matrescence will open in The Courthouse Gallery & Studios (CHG&S), Ennistymon, on the 1st March and run until April 26th 2025. Opening reception on Saturday 1st of March at 7pm.
